The Baltimore Orioles fell short against the Seattle Mariners in the series opener, losing 6-3 in a game marked by critical errors and a contentious call that shifted momentum. The Orioles faced a challenging situation in the bottom of the seventh, trailing 5-2 with the bases loaded and only one out. With power hitter Pete Alonso at the plate, a single swing could have altered the game's trajectory.
Mariners reliever Matt Brash struggled with control, already having hit Taylor Ward and walked Gunnar Henderson. Alonso found himself in a prime position after falling behind 3-0. However, after a series of swings that included a foul ball and a strike, he appeared to draw a walk on a close 3-2 pitch. But the excitement quickly turned to disbelief when the call was overturned after a challenge, revealing that the ball had grazed the strike zone—transforming what could have been a crucial run into a strikeout. Alonso, visibly frustrated, dropped to his knees as the crowd reacted in shock.
In the following inning, the Orioles made another costly mistake while attempting to rally. After scoring a run to reduce the deficit to 6-3, Jackson Holliday tagged up from third base on a deep fly ball, while Blaze Alexander attempted to advance from first to second. A perfect throw from Julio Rodríguez resulted in a double play, negating what could have been a key scoring opportunity. The Mariners challenged the play, and replays confirmed that Alexander was tagged out before Holliday crossed home plate, nullifying the run.
Despite a solid start from fill-in pitcher Trey Gibson, who held the Mariners scoreless for four innings, a series of poor decisions and missed opportunities proved detrimental for Baltimore. Manager Craig Albernaz's decision to bring in Anthony Nunez, who has struggled with a high ERA, backfired when he walked a batter and then surrendered a grand slam to Josh Naylor, giving Seattle a commanding 5-1 lead. The Orioles were unable to recover, ultimately succumbing to a 6-3 defeat as they entered the ninth inning with little left in the tank against Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz.
This loss marks yet another frustrating chapter in the Orioles’ season, highlighting both the challenges of execution and the impact of critical calls in decisive moments.
