Mariners Triumph Over Orioles with Naylor's Grand Slam, 6-3

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners secured a 6-3 victory against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night, highlighted by a grand slam from Josh Naylor during a decisive five-run fifth inning. The win marks the Mariners' 10th victory in their last 13 games, reinforcing their position at the top of the AL West standings.

Randy Arozarena contributed significantly to the Mariners' success, recording three hits throughout the game. The Orioles struggled with runners in scoring position, going just 1 for 9, and are now on a three-game losing streak, their first since being swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in mid-May.

The pivotal fifth inning began with a sacrifice fly from Ryan Bliss, tying the game at 1. Cole Young's single prompted the Orioles to replace rookie pitcher Trey Gibson, who was making his MLB debut. Reliever Anthony Nunez then walked Julio Rodríguez, setting the stage for Naylor’s grand slam, his seventh home run of the season, which sailed just over the right field wall.

The Orioles managed to narrow the gap to 5-2 in the seventh inning when a wild pitch from Mariners reliever Matt Brash allowed Coby Mayo to score. However, a close call ensued when Brash nearly walked Pete Alonso, which would have brought in another run, but after a challenge, Alonso was called out on strikes. Colton Cowser grounded out, leaving the bases loaded.

In the eighth inning, a review overturned a run for the Orioles after Blaze Alexander's RBI single brought the score to 6-3. Pinch hitter Samuel Basallo appeared to hit a sacrifice fly to center, but a review confirmed that Rodríguez had thrown out Alexander at second base before Jackson Holliday could cross home plate.

Emerson Hancock (5-2) pitched five innings, allowing one run and striking out three batters, while Andrés Muñoz recorded his 10th save of the season in the ninth. Gibson (1-1), who was promoted from Triple-A Norfolk earlier in the day to fill in for the injured Chris Bassitt, surrendered three runs over 4 2/3 innings. Seattle also missed shortstop Colt Emerson due to back tightness.

The teams will meet again on Tuesday, with Seattle's Logan Gilbert (4-4, 3.79 ERA) set to face Baltimore's Trevor Rogers (3-6, 6.29).
