Mark DeCarli Concludes 14-Year Tenure as Greencastle-Antrim Softball Coach
Mark DeCarli has officially resigned from his position as the softball coach for Greencastle-Antrim after a remarkable 14-year career that included over 200 victories. His resignation came shortly after the team was eliminated in the initial round of the Class 5A state tournament, a decision that he had been contemplating for quite some time. “It’s been a decision that’s been going through my head for about two years now,” DeCarli shared with the Public Opinion. “This year, I felt it was the right thing to do. It was time to put myself first and take care of my health and do some things just for me.”
DeCarli leaves behind a legacy that is hard to match. With a record of 211 wins against 84 losses, he led the Blue Devils to significant achievements, including a District 3 championship in 2013, nine division titles, and a Mid-Penn Conference championship. His coaching prowess earned him seven Coach of the Year honors and he guided his squad to the state championship game in 2025, a pinnacle moment in his coaching journey.
Although he pondered resigning last year, DeCarli chose to stay on to support a talented group of players. Reflecting on that decision, he said, “I thought last year was definitely going to be it, but after the historic run to the state championship [game], I felt I owed it to the girls to come back and give it another shot.” Despite facing challenges at the start of the season, including illness and early losses, he praised his team’s resilience in securing the division title.
On the day the Greencastle-Antrim baseball team reached the state finals—a moment that mirrored his own team's previous success—DeCarli expressed the significance of such achievements. “That was so special,” he remarked. “Everyone should get an opportunity to be in that game. Once you’re there, there’s nothing else like it.”
In addition to his coaching career, DeCarli has dedicated 27 years to teaching within the school system and plans to continue in that role moving forward.
