Mastering Iron Compression: Tips from David Armitage

Understanding how to effectively compress your irons is crucial for improving your golf game, not just for impressing fellow players. However, many amateur golfers struggle with this technique due to a common misconception. David Armitage, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher, points out that a prevalent error among amateurs is their belief that they should strike the ground before making contact with the ball. This approach not only hampers proper compression but also results in a weaker strike, leading to inconsistent shots and reduced distance.

“When your body is going forward, the club face stays stable. When your body is backing up, the club face is going to be unstable,” Armitage explains. He emphasizes that ball strike, distance, and direction are interconnected. To rectify this issue, he advises golfers to focus on hitting the ball before the turf.

For those interested in improving their compression skills, Armitage suggests a straightforward drill. Begin by positioning a ball in the center of your stance and marking this spot with a tee or an alignment rod. Then, measure three to four ball lengths towards your target and place a tee just outside that point. Remove any excess balls and aim to strike the tee with your club during your swing.

After successfully hitting the tee with solid swings, reintroduce a ball, placing a tee where the ball would typically sit. As you swing, focus on striking the tee while making contact with the ball. “Forget about the ball almost,” Armitage advises, encouraging golfers to concentrate on the tee instead. With practice, you’ll notice a distinct change in the sound and feel of your shots as your weight transfer improves and your ball flight becomes more controlled.

Ultimately, mastering iron compression will enhance your overall performance on the course, as all elements of your swing will start to align more effectively.
