Miami Dolphins Should Consider Bidding on QB Brendan Sorsby in Supplemental Draft

CINCINNATI, OH—Brendan Sorsby, the quarterback for the Cincinnati Bearcats, has recently faced a setback as the NCAA rejected his appeal for eligibility, prompting speculation about his potential entry into the NFL’s Supplemental Draft this summer. The Miami Dolphins, who are currently evaluating their quarterback situation, should certainly take notice.

The Dolphins appear to have moved on from Tua Tagovailoa, opting instead for Malik Willis, a former Green Bay Packer, under the leadership of a new general manager and head coach. However, the uncertainty surrounding Willis's performance raises questions about whether the Dolphins have truly found their long-term solution at quarterback.

Sorsby’s situation is complicated by a reported gambling addiction, which has limited his options for maintaining his eligibility. With the NCAA's denial of Texas Tech’s appeal on his behalf, the chance of Sorsby entering the Supplemental Draft has increased significantly. If he does, the Dolphins should definitely consider placing a bid, albeit with some caution.

Miami’s general manager, Jon-Eric Sullivan, has emphasized the importance of consistently investing in quarterbacks. He stated, “The quarterback position is the most important position in sports…we’re going to invest in that position every year if we can.” While Sorsby boasts significant physical talent, his gambling issues make him a more precarious investment. The Dolphins should aim for a low-risk bid, ideally a fourth or fifth-round pick, instead of going all in with a first or second-round selection.

Ultimately, the Dolphins need to remain proactive in their strategy. Sorsby has the potential to be a valuable asset, and not placing a bid due to concerns about his gambling history would be a missed opportunity. If he enters the draft, Miami should seize the chance to add depth to their quarterback roster, balancing caution with ambition.
