The Michigan State Spartans have a shot to do something special, and it all starts Tuesday morning in Omaha.

Get your coffee and brunch ready as Michigan State and Purdue kick off this year’s Big Ten Tournament at Charles Schwab Field. For the Spartans, simply getting to Omaha was an accomplishment in itself.

Michigan State clawed its way into the tournament thanks in large part to Nebraska sweeping Minnesota, which opened the door for the Spartans to leapfrog the Gophers and secure the coveted No. 12 seed in the field.

That’s significant because, with 18 teams now in the Big Ten, only the top 12 advance to the conference tournament. Michigan State may be the final seed in the bracket, but the Spartans are dancing nonetheless.

Previous Matchup

These two teams met earlier this season just under two months ago in late March. Michigan State hosted Purdue at Jeff Ishbia Field in East Lansing and came away victorious in Game 1 of the series. However, Purdue bounced back to win the final two games and take the series.

Aidan Donovan got the ball for the Spartans in the opener, and it would come as no surprise to see his name called again Tuesday morning. Donovan has been, by far, Michigan State’s ace this season.

The right-hander carries a 3.84 ERA with a 5-3 record across 14 starts this year. Time and time again, when the Spartans needed a big performance, Donovan delivered.

That was certainly the case against Purdue in the first matchup, when Donovan threw 5.1 innings while allowing just three hits, three earned runs, and striking out five. Although he didn’t earn the win, Michigan State still found a way to finish the job.

That victory went to Nolan Higgins, who entered after Ryan McKay blasted a go-ahead homer in the sixth inning to give Michigan State a 4-3 lead. Higgins shut the door the rest of the way and dominated Purdue to secure the Spartans’ win.

Game 2 turned into an offensive explosion, with Purdue outlasting Michigan State 16-13 in a slugfest that featured five combined home runs. The ball was flying all afternoon.

Then, in the rubber match, Purdue flexed its muscle with an 11-4 victory to cap off the series win.

Leading Into the Game

Michigan State enters the tournament at 22-31 overall and 11-19 in conference play, but the Spartans have gone 6-3 over their last nine games despite being swept by No. 1 seed UCLA.

Oddly enough, that UCLA series may have given this team confidence.

Even though the Spartans were swept, they had legitimate chances to win all three games against one of the best teams in the country. Michigan State simply couldn’t close things out when the biggest moments arrived.

Still, those losses appeared to spark a newfound motivation within the clubhouse. The Spartans proved to themselves they can compete with elite competition, regardless of the opponent.

Now, the challenge becomes executing in crunch time.

If Michigan State can jump out to an early lead and lean on the arm of Aidan Donovan — with Nolan Higgins likely waiting in the bullpen to close things out — the Spartans absolutely have a legitimate shot to pull off the upset.

Purdue, meanwhile, enters the tournament coming off a rough ending to the regular season after getting swept by Iowa.

Before that, however, the Boilermakers were one of the hotter teams in the conference, riding a seven-game winning streak that included sweeps over Murray State and Indiana.

What Happens Next?

Win: If Michigan State defeats Purdue, the Spartans will advance to face the winner of No. 8 Iowa vs. No. 9 Illinois on Wednesday.

Lose: If the Spartans fall to Purdue, they will face the loser of No. 8 Iowa vs. No. 9 Illinois.

The Big Ten Tournament is double elimination, meaning Michigan State would still have another opportunity even with a loss Tuesday morning.

Prediction

Michigan State has been playing with urgency over the final stretch of the season, and with Aidan Donovan likely on the mound, the Spartans should feel confident heading into Omaha.

Purdue is the more consistent team on paper, but Michigan State has already shown it can beat the Boilermakers once this season. If the Spartans can get timely hitting and another strong outing from Donovan, they have a real chance to extend their season.

Prediction: Michigan State — 5 Purdue — 3
