Mickey Joseph Credits Coach Hank Tierney for His Success in Football
MARRERO, La. – Mickey Joseph, head coach of Grambling State University, recently held one of his many football camps, emphasizing the abundant talent he finds in his hometown. As a native of the Westbank area, Joseph noted that recruiting local players has yielded exceptional results, a sentiment that resonates with his team’s roster, which includes nearly 20 athletes from New Orleans.
Entering his third season at the helm, Joseph aims to build on last year's successful 7-5 record. He draws inspiration from his own experiences at Archbishop Shaw High School, particularly from the influential coaching of Hank Tierney. “He’s a proven winner. Everywhere he goes, he wins,” Joseph remarked, highlighting the deep bond he shares with Tierney, whom he has known since he was 15 years old. “He’s like a second father to us and our family – me, my brothers and my cousins. Hank is one of the coaches that would still yell at us,” he added with a smile.
Joseph's acknowledgment of Tierney underlines the significant role mentorship plays in shaping young athletes. His commitment to fostering local talent reflects a broader trend in college football, where community connections can be pivotal for success.
