Minnesota Vikings Part Ways with Defensive Tackle Jaylon Hutchings as He Re-Signs with CFL Team
The Minnesota Vikings have made a notable move this offseason, but it comes with a twist as defensive tackle Jaylon Hutchings has chosen to continue his career with the Calgary Stampeders, effectively closing the door on his NFL aspirations for the 2026 season. This decision follows the Vikings' earlier signing of Hutchings, who was expected to be a valuable addition to their defensive lineup.
Last year, the Vikings unearthed significant talent after their rookie minicamp, particularly on the defensive front. They previously secured Jalen Redmond in June 2024, who not only made the roster but emerged as a key player under defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Meanwhile, Elijah Williams also made an impression during training camp, earning first-team reps at defensive end.
Hutchings, who had been an All-CFL player and the Most Outstanding Defender in 2025, was initially seen as a promising prospect for the Vikings. However, he faced a multi-week injury that led to his release. Following this setback, the Vikings expressed a desire to evaluate their roster after the draft, leaving the possibility open for Hutchings' return.
Nonetheless, the defensive tackle has opted to re-sign with the Stampeders on a three-year contract, ensuring his commitment to the CFL through the 2028 season. This decision significantly reduces the likelihood of him returning to the NFL in the near future.
While it’s unfortunate for the Vikings to lose a player with Hutchings’ potential, he is set to make his mark in the CFL, starting this week.
