Monroe County Teams Compete in Regional Baseball and Softball Championships
The regional championships for baseball and softball teams in Monroe County showcased some intense competition this past weekend. Various high schools battled it out for a chance to advance further in the state playoffs, with many teams demonstrating impressive skills on the field.
In softball, the Division 1 semifinals held at Bedford featured Northville overpowering Gibraltar Carlson with a score of 11-1, while Saline triumphed over Livonia Churchill 8-1. The finals saw Northville narrowly defeat Saline, finishing 2-1 to claim the regional title.
Over in Division 2 at Fowlerville, Airport emerged victorious against Chelsea, winning 7-2, and Milan dominated Jackson County Parma Western 19-8. In the finals, Airport secured the regional championship by defeating Milan 11-4.
Division 3 action at Wixom St. Catherine saw Plymouth Christian crush Detroit Cristo Rey 20-1, while Whiteford blanked Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett 10-0. The finals concluded with Whiteford taking the title, edging Plymouth Christian 7-2.
In Division 4 at Dansville, Summerfield defeated Reading decisively at 12-1, and Dansville won against Hudson 9-5. The championship match resulted in Summerfield securing the title with a close 3-1 victory over Dansville.
On the baseball side, the Division 1 semifinals featured Monroe winning against Livonia Franklin 5-0, and Dexter defeating Howell 7-1. In the regional finals, Dexter claimed a resounding 14-0 win over Monroe. Dexter later faced Detroit Catholic Central in the state quarterfinals, ultimately losing 5-2.
In Division 2, Tecumseh edged New Boston Huron 4-3, and Dearborn Divine Child outlasted Grosse Pointe North 14-11 in a high-scoring affair. The regional final saw Divine Child narrowly defeat Tecumseh 2-1 after eight innings, and they continued their success into the quarterfinals with a decisive 12-2 win against Williamston.
Division 3 featured Plymouth Christian beating SMCC 12-6 and Jackson Lumen Christi shutting out Springport 6-0. However, in the regional final, Jackson Lumen Christi fell to Plymouth Christian 6-0, and later lost to Detroit Edison 7-6 in another tightly contested quarterfinal that required extra innings.
In Division 4, Summerfield dominated Dansville 12-2, while Kalamazoo Hackett narrowly defeated Martin 4-3. The regional final saw Kalamazoo Hackett win 4-0 over Summerfield, but they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Marcellus, who won 9-6.
This weekend's regional results mark a significant step in the post-season journey for many teams within the Monroe County area.
