Mystics Coach Faces Possible Consequences Following Ejection in Heavy Loss to Dream
The Washington Mystics endured a significant defeat against the Atlanta Dream on Saturday, falling 109-77, a match that ended with head coach Sydney Johnson being ejected for an explosive outburst aimed at the referees. With the Dream in control at 64-43 and just under four minutes left in the third quarter, Johnson engaged in a heated argument with an official regarding a previous play.
Despite attempts from his coaching staff and even one of the players, Kiki Iriafen, to calm him down, Johnson's frustration escalated. He was seen trying to approach the referees while shouting and gesturing emphatically. Iriafen's reassurance that all was well did little to quell his anger, leading to a situation where game officials had to intervene to escort him off the court after he received two technical fouls.
This outburst occurred in a game where the Dream were awarded an impressive 41 free throws, compared to just 27 for the Mystics. Johnson appeared particularly incensed after a turnover involving Alicia Florez Getino, which allowed Angel Reese to steal the ball, followed by a shooting foul against Getino shortly thereafter. Video footage of the incident, including clips shared by ESPNW, captured Johnson's fervent exchange with the officials.
As a result of his actions, Johnson may be facing disciplinary measures, including a potential fine from the WNBA, reminiscent of last year's incident where Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve was fined $15,000 for a similar ejection. The league's decision will likely hinge on discussions with the officiating crew and any further remarks Johnson makes in postgame interviews.
Having transitioned from coaching the Fairfield men's basketball team to leading the Mystics in 2025, Johnson's first season has seen the team struggle, finishing 16-28 and placing fourth in the Eastern Conference. Following the loss to the Dream, the Mystics' record now stands at 4-5 for the season, while Atlanta has surged to 7-3, claiming the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Mystics will look to rebound against the Chicago Sky on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.
