NCAA President Urges Congressional Action After Court Ruling Allows Sorsby to Play

NCAA President Charlie Baker, who previously served as the governor of Massachusetts, has called on Congress to take action following a recent court ruling that permits quarterback Brendan Sorsby to compete in college football at Texas Tech. Earlier this year, Sorsby was handed a lifetime ban by the NCAA due to his involvement in sports betting, but a Texas district judge's injunction has now allowed him to return to the field.

Baker, a prominent figure in the Republican Party, expressed his concerns about the ruling's implications for the integrity of college sports. He took to Twitter to advocate for Congress to create legislation that would grant the NCAA the authority to enforce its regulations more effectively. He stated, “There is no better example of why targeted intervention from Congress is necessary. When you have schools and deep-pocketed supporters willing to look the other way on the glaring integrity threat of betting on your own team – and judges whose rulings effectively strip away our ability to stop them – only Congress can equip the @NCAA to apply this common sense rule to everyone fairly and consistently.”

As part of the court's decision, Sorsby will face a two-game suspension at the beginning of the upcoming season, a compromise agreed upon by his legal team and Texas Tech. Meanwhile, the NCAA has issued a statement expressing its strong disagreement with the ruling and raising alarm over the potential risks it poses to the integrity of college athletics. The organization emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the competitive fairness of sports and expressed dismay over Sorsby's history of placing 40 bets on the Indiana Hoosiers while he was an active player.
