New Zealand Defender Tim Payne Embraces Social Media Stardom Ahead of World Cup
New Zealand's Tim Payne is navigating his newfound social media prominence with ease as he gears up for the World Cup, where his nation is the lowest-ranked team in the tournament. In less than a week, the defender's Instagram following skyrocketed from 4,715 to an astonishing 4.2 million after an Argentine influencer labeled him the least recognized player and encouraged his followers to engage with Payne's account.
Coach Darren Bazeley expressed his confusion regarding the dynamics of viral social media but noted that Payne is managing the attention remarkably well. “I’m not very social media-savvy. From my understanding, it's obviously a big deal; the numbers they’re talking about are huge,” Bazeley shared with reporters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “I think Tim's dealing with it really well. He’s probably the type of person who doesn’t get over-excited with too much. He knows why he's here and what he wants to get from this tournament.”
This surge in popularity was sparked by influencer Valen Scarsini, known as "elscarso" on social media, who created a video urging his audience to support the Wellington Phoenix player. Payne's follower count now surpasses many notable New Zealand athletes, including cricketer Kane Williamson and the All Blacks rugby team.
In a video posted on Friday, Payne expressed gratitude toward Scarsini in Spanish, describing the experience as a “pretty crazy 48 hours.” His feed is now filled with messages of support in various languages, showcasing the global reach of his unexpected fame. One follower wrote, “Our GOAT. No Payne, no gain.”
Scarsini announced plans to travel to Florida to attend New Zealand's World Cup warmup match against Haiti, where he looks forward to meeting Payne afterward. Bazeley noted the unique nature of the situation, stating, “Sometimes you think you won’t see anything that’s different. It’s a game of football, 11 v 11, same pitch, same ball. But we’ve come here and something different has happened with this.”
Midfielder Marko Stamenic also expressed his support for Payne, stating that he is confident the attention won't affect him. “It honestly just shows the power of social media,” he remarked, adding that Payne remains focused on the team's objectives.
