Ocean City Claims First Sectional Title in Nearly Four Decades Amid Thrilling Softball Playoffs

The Ocean City High School softball team celebrated a historic achievement on Thursday by clinching its first sectional title in 37 years, securing a 4-2 win against Clearview in the South Jersey Group 3 championship. With an impressive record of 23-6, the Red Raiders are set to face Central Jersey champion Steinert in the upcoming state semifinals on Monday.

Brooke Douglas played a pivotal role in the victory, contributing two hits and two RBIs while also delivering three shutout innings in relief to earn the save. She struck out eight batters, complementing starter Jessica Mooney's performance, who recorded nine strikeouts over four innings. Sophomore Leah Catto had a standout game with three hits, raising her season total to a record-breaking 53, while also crossing the plate twice.

After Clearview tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-run homer from Ava D’Alessandro, Ocean City responded decisively. In the fifth inning, the team rallied to score two runs, thanks to consecutive hits from Catto, Mooney, Douglas, and Alex Rothman.

In other sectional finals, Kingsway secured a 3-1 victory over Cherokee in the South Jersey Group 4 championship, with freshman Sydney Schiavone hitting a two-run homer in the eighth inning. Meanwhile, Barnegat edged Gloucester 2-1 in the South Jersey Group 2 final, ending the Lions' season despite Emma Dick's remarkable performance of 16 strikeouts.

In the South Jersey Group 1 final, Pennsville triumphed over Woodstown with a commanding 10-0 score, claiming the program's first sectional title since 2008. The Eagles showcased a balanced attack, with their top five hitters each contributing to the scoreboard. Central Jersey Group 1 saw Bound Brook defeat Florence 4-3 in a nail-biting 10-inning match, with Rachael Gurczeski delivering the game-winning hit.
