Owen Ayers Shines with Five RBIs as Smokies Edge Barons in Extra Innings

In a thrilling matchup, the Knoxville Smokies triumphed over the Birmingham Barons, 8-7, after 11 innings, with catcher Owen Ayers leading the charge by driving in five runs. The game showcased a back-and-forth battle at Covenant Health Park in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Ayers, who had a standout performance, notched a three-run homer in the fifth inning, marking his eighth of the season, and finished the night with three hits in four at-bats, including a double. He also contributed with a walk and a stolen base, proving to be a significant asset for the Smokies.

Starter Dawson Netz set the tone with three solid innings, allowing just one run while striking out two. The bullpen played a crucial role as well, particularly Marino Santy, who allowed only one unearned run in 2.2 innings. Tyler Santana came in during a tense moment in the tenth, successfully getting out of a bases-loaded jam before surrendering a run in the eleventh.

Jefferson Rojas delivered the decisive hit, doubling in the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh. Rojas had a productive night, going 2 for 6 with three runs scored. Shortstop Karson Simas also contributed significantly, finishing 3 for 5 with an RBI.

In other minor league action, the Iowa Cubs fell to the Toledo Mud Hens, 8-4, while the South Bend Cubs split a doubleheader against the Quad Cities River Bandits, losing the first game 13-8 before bouncing back to win the second, 4-3.
