Padres Fall to Mets in Series Finale, Questions Surround Offense
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres faced another setback on Sunday, losing their series finale against the New York Mets with a score of 7-3. This defeat compounded their current struggles, leaving them a half-game shy of a National League playoff position and raising more questions about the team's offensive capabilities.
The game saw starter Randy Vásquez struggle, yielding two early runs that set the tone for the contest. After a promising start to the season, the 27-year-old's record has slipped to 2-4, with 17 earned runs allowed over his last 35 2/3 innings. On Sunday, he was touched up for four earned runs and eight hits, leaving the team in a difficult position.
"Some days you’re going to have it and some days you’re not," remarked Padres manager Craig Stammen. "Unfortunately, we’re kind of having a lot of guys right now that feel like nothing’s going our way." The team’s struggles were evident, as they managed just one hit in seven attempts with runners in scoring position.
Manny Machado's continued difficulties at the plate also contributed to the team's woes, as he finished the game 0-for-4, bringing his batting average down to a dismal .179, the lowest among all qualified hitters in Major League Baseball. Base running errors have further compounded their challenges, with Fernando Tatis Jr. getting caught trying to steal third base at a crucial moment in the game.
As the Padres' record falls to 33-31, they must quickly address their issues, with their next challenge coming against the Cincinnati Reds at home starting Monday.
