Padres Set to Shine in Dominican Summer League
The San Diego Padres organization is fielding two teams in this year's Dominican Summer League (DSL). Players from both Padres Gold and Padres Brown are training and living at their Dominican Academies, competing on the grounds of team-operated training facilities. The season kicked off on June 1, featuring several highly regarded international prospects.
During the international signing period that began on January 15, Padres scouts and executives brought numerous players into the fold. The team's roster has expanded significantly, as reflected in their transactions section. All players must be at least 16 years old and turn 17 before September 1 of the signing year. The DSL serves as a vital starting point for most of these athletes beginning their professional journeys.
The Padres have a substantial bonus pool of $5.94 million for this signing class, which will be active until December 15. Among the standout signings are three players ranked in MLB Pipeline's top 100 international prospects, all of whom are currently playing in the DSL. Additionally, there are three promising prospects from the previous 2025 class who are making their mark.
Notable players to watch include 18-year-old Venezuelan shortstop/third baseman Deivid Coronil, who is currently not active, and Jhoan De La Cruz, also 18, who is now playing for the ACL Padres. RHP Lan-Hong-Su, a 19-year-old from Taiwan, has made a strong impression with a 1.29 ERA in his first three games for the ACL team.
Among the 2026 class, the Padres recently signed 17-year-old Cuban shortstop Joniel Hernandez, the No. 13 ranked international prospect, for a $1.4 million bonus. Other notable signings include LHP Diego Serna from Mexico and SS/3B Timothy Mogen from Curacao, both of whom are expected to be key players this season.
The DSL season typically spans 72 games and concludes in August. Last year, the Padres DSL Gold team clinched the championship and will be vying to defend their title this season. Fans can look forward to weekly updates on the team's progress through Gaslamp Ball.
