Paysandu Claims Sixth Copa Verde Title with Dominant Victory

Paysandu celebrated their sixth Copa Verde championship on Sunday night, defeating Anápolis decisively with a score of 4-0 at the Mangueirão stadium. After losing the first leg of the final 3-1 at the Jonas Duarte Stadium in Anápolis, Paysandu managed to secure the aggregate victory of 5-3.

This year's Copa Verde showcased a unique journey for Paysandu, as they reached the final for the tenth time in the tournament's 13-year history, having previously finished as runners-up on four occasions. Anápolis, on the other hand, made their first-ever final appearance after clinching the Copa Centro-Oeste title by overcoming Rio Branco-ES.

Paysandu's path to the final included a successful campaign in the Copa Norte, where they triumphed over Nacional-AM. The 2026 Copa Verde format featured a split into the Copa Centro-Oeste and Copa Norte, involving 24 clubs, with the champions facing off for the title.

During the match at Mangueirão, a vibrant crowd backed Paysandu as they sought to overturn the first-leg deficit. The home team delivered an impressive performance characterized by tactical discipline and quick transitions. Although Anápolis aimed to defend their lead and launch counterattacks, Paysandu took control early in the first half. Kleiton Pego scored the opener with a precise long-range shot that found the corner of the net.

The second half brought even more intensity, as Paysandu quickly leveled the aggregate score. Marcinho's cross found Thayllon, who assisted Castro for a close-range finish. As both teams pushed for more goals, it seemed penalties might determine the winner. However, in stoppage time, Ítalo scored twice in quick succession, sealing the match and the title for Paysandu.

The victory sparked jubilant celebrations among Paysandu’s loyal supporters, while the players reveled in their achievement on the pitch. The trophy and medals were presented by CBF Competitions Director Julio Avellar alongside the presidents of the Pará and Goiás Football Federations, Ricardo Paul and Ronei Freitas, marking a triumphant night for the six-time champions.
