Philadelphia Phillies Lose Frustrating Series to Guardians
The Philadelphia Philies have been one of the hottest teams in baseball over the last month and have gotten themselves right back into the playoff hunt after a disastrous start.
As well as the Phillies have played, they still have a lot of work to do, and their series loss to the Cleveland Guardians is a perfect example of that. The Phillies lost two of three against the interleague opponent in what was largely a frustrating weekend
Let’s start with the good: the Phillies pitched well enough to win the series. Each of Philly’s starters did their jobs, and then some, against the Guardians.
Cristopher Sanchez extended his scorlessing inning streak after throwing eight dominant innings in the series opener. Zack Wheeler continued his strong start, throwing 6.0 scorless innings with just three base runners on Saturday evening. Finally, the
All in all, the starting pitching combined to post a 0.90 ERA against the Guardians.
However, the Phillies still lost the series, largely because the offense reverted to its early 2026 form and was nonexistent against Cleveland pitching. The Phillies' lineup generated just four runs, and combined to log a .185 batting average over the three-game set.
Don Mattingly cited Philly’s offensive struggles simply as a “well-pitched series on both sides.”
“There's not a lot to say other than those type of games are games that they’re playoff type games, honestly, when you get pitching like that, bullpens that are good. It's gonna be the little things that we're able to do, scratch for a run here or there that are gonna make a difference. This series, we didn't do it.”
While there is some validity to Mattingly’s comments, the Guardians did pitch well, starting with a gem from Gavin Williams in the series opener, the Phillies still need to find ways to do the little things to generate runs. Cleveland was able to just that.
After the Phillies’ series loss to the Guardians, they’re back under .500 with a record of 26-27.
Should there be the same level of concern there was at the beginning of April when Philadelphia couldn’t generate runs? No.
However, the Phillies still clearly have some areas to improve upon and voids to fill for this team to truly be considered a World Series contender.
