Pirates Eyeing Potential Trade of Pitcher as Trade Deadline Approaches

PITTSBURGH, PA - As the MLB trade deadline approaches in just under two months, the Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves in a critical position, particularly regarding their bullpen. After 66 games, the team holds a record of 34-32, and with nearly 100 games remaining, bolstering the bullpen has become essential for their playoff aspirations.

In a recent analysis by ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Pirates were categorized as a team that “Could Acquire… But,” indicating the need for strategic decisions ahead of the deadline. Passan noted, “Barring a rough June — which is not entirely out of the realm of possibility with upcoming series against the Braves, Dodgers, Mariners, and Phillies — the Pirates will add at the deadline.” Following this assessment, the Pirates faced a tough challenge, getting swept by the Atlanta Braves, where a late-game mishap saw reliever Evan Sisk allow a bases-clearing double that cost them the game.

While Passan expressed confidence in the Pirates’ starting rotation, which features Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller, he acknowledged that the bullpen requires further reinforcement. He suggested that the team might consider trading Carmen Mlodzinski, particularly after he showcased strong performance in his first relief appearance, yielding only one run in four innings against Houston.

Additionally, Passan highlighted Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers as a potential target for the Pirates to strengthen their batting lineup. Jeffers, boasting a .295 average and a .408 on-base percentage, could offer consistency behind the plate. However, the primary focus remains on improving the bullpen, which currently has a 4.14 ERA, among the worst in the National League.

As the trade deadline approaches, names like Aroldis Chapman and Garrett Whitlock from the Boston Red Sox have surfaced as possible acquisitions. Chapman has been particularly impressive this season, with a minuscule 0.46 ERA, making him an attractive option for teams seeking relief pitching.

The Pirates will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to host the Los Angeles Dodgers, the reigning champions, for a three-game series starting Tuesday night. With playoff hopes on the line, securing reliable bullpen help will be key for the Pirates to make a strong push in the second half of the season.
