Pittsburgh Steelers Secure Darnell Washington with Four-Year Extension
The Pittsburgh Steelers are solidifying their roster with a series of contract extensions as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 season. Under the leadership of new coach Mike McCarthy, the franchise aims to retain key young talent while seeking a return to playoff contention after their AFC North title last season, despite falling short in the postseason.
On Wednesday night, it was reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that the Steelers have finalized a four-year extension for tight end Darnell Washington valued at $42 million, which includes $21 million guaranteed. Washington's season was unfortunately cut short by a broken arm, but he still managed to participate in 16 games, recording 31 catches on 43 targets for a total of 364 receiving yards and a touchdown.
This extension signifies the Steelers' confidence in Washington, who is expected to step up as the primary tight end, surpassing both Pat Friermuth and rookie Riley Nowakowski. This decision follows the team's recent extension of linebacker Nick Herbig, illustrating their commitment to building a robust lineup.
With McCarthy’s offensive strategy often utilizing tight ends effectively, Washington's role is set to expand, especially with quarterback Aaron Rodgers expected to return. The combination of these players could create a formidable challenge for opposing defenses, who will have to account for top wide receivers DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. as well.
This move reflects the Steelers' ambition to enhance their offensive capabilities as they look to make a deeper playoff run in the near future.
