Pope Leo XIV Declares Support for Real Madrid, Welcomed by Club President Florentino Perez

Real Madrid, one of the most celebrated football clubs globally, boasts a vast and diverse fanbase, including notable figures from various walks of life. Recently, an impressive revelation emerged regarding one of its supporters.

During a recent event on the eve of the 2026 World Cup, Pope Leo XIV was asked about his favorite football team. While he took a diplomatic stance in light of his position, he candidly shared that he personally supports Real Madrid. “That’s easy. The Pope is for all the teams… but Robert Prevost is a Real Madrid fan,” he noted, highlighting his affiliation.

The Pope's comments quickly reached the ears of Real Madrid officials, prompting club president Florentino Perez to respond during his closing remarks at a candidacy ceremony. “I would like to welcome Leo XIV to Spain. Today he said on the plane that he is a Real Madrid fan and that is a source of pride for us. Welcome, Your Holiness,” Perez stated, expressing his delight over the Pontiff’s admission.

Pope Leo XIV is currently on a tour of Spain that will continue until June 12. As part of this visit, he is scheduled to appear at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Monday to connect with his followers, as confirmed by an official statement from Real Madrid.

Preparations are underway at the Bernabéu to ensure a warm reception for the Pope, with a large banner outside the stadium reading “Welcome, Holy Father.” Inside, a stage has been set up for him to address attendees, who will also have the opportunity to view the event on giant screens throughout the stadium.
