Portland Fire's Megan Gustafson Shines as an Expansion Team Star
The WNBA’s annual roster decisions are always a challenging affair, with many skilled players often missing out on opportunities within the league. However, the recent expansion of teams helps to alleviate this issue by allowing more athletes to showcase their talents, as evidenced by the debut of the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo this season.
In a thrilling game on Saturday night, the Portland Fire demonstrated the potential of an expansion team, securing a decisive 100-84 victory over the Indiana Fever and standout player Caitlin Clark. Among the notable performers was Megan Gustafson, who delivered a stellar performance that underscored her significance within the team.
After the game, an emotional Gustafson reflected on her journey, stating, “We’re a bunch of overlooked players," after finishing with a remarkable 22 points. She achieved an impressive shooting record, converting all eight of her attempts from the field, including a three-pointer, and made five of six free throws. Additionally, Gustafson contributed a rebound and a block, finishing with a plus-15 in 28 minutes of play.
Previously a standout at Iowa, Gustafson faced challenges adapting to the evolving style of professional basketball, which led her to fight for her place in the WNBA. With Saturday marking just her 14th career start and her first this season, she expressed gratitude towards the Fire organization, saying, “I’m thankful for this team, this organization. They believe in me.”
The Fire currently hold a 6-4 record, continually battling against formidable foes. The team is made up of players who have experienced doubt in their careers, and they are now seizing the chance to prove themselves. With every game, and performances like Gustafson’s, the belief in the Portland Fire grows stronger.
