Portland Trail Blazers Eagerly Eye Giannis Antetokounmpo Amid Bucks Trade Talks
For the first time in his career, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s departure from the Milwaukee Bucks seems increasingly plausible this season. Sources suggest that the Bucks are open to trade discussions involving their star player, although the team is in no rush to finalize any deals. Instead, they plan to strategically assess their options to optimize their position in negotiations.
Several franchises have shown significant interest in acquiring Antetokounmpo, whose exceptional skills could dramatically enhance a team's competitive edge. Among these potential suitors are the Portland Trail Blazers, who appear ready to make bold moves to secure the superstar.
NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the Blazers are willing to pursue Antetokounmpo even if he does not agree to a long-term contract before a trade is executed. “I’m pretty sure that Portland would do a couple players, starters, and a first-round pick for Giannis, no matter the risk-reward,” Charania stated. “You just go get Giannis. But the price is not going to be that this go around. It’s not going to be a couple rotational players and a first-round pick.”
This season, when healthy, Antetokounmpo maintained an MVP-caliber performance with averages of 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. However, his season was marred by tensions with the Bucks’ management over his health management, contributing to a disappointing end for the team, which failed to reach the playoffs.
While teams like the Blazers are actively pursuing Antetokounmpo, others, such as the Oklahoma City Thunder, are not considered strong contenders for his services. Insider Jake Fischer noted that despite having the assets to make a competitive offer, the Thunder are not viewed as a serious candidate for a trade for the star. The Bucks seem to be moving towards a trade of Antetokounmpo before the NBA Draft on June 23, as indicated by comments from co-owner Jimmy Haslam.
As the landscape of the league evolves, the potential for such a significant move could reshape both the Bucks and the Blazers, with playoff implications hanging in the balance.
