  • The claim that the NASCAR driver Kurt Busch died from double pneumonia is unproven. NASCAR, Busch's team and his family announced the death of the 41-year-old father of two on May 21, 2026, but did not provide a cause.
  • The source of the claim was unclear at the time of this writing.
  • Though social media users spread the claim online, we found no primary evidence from credible sources confirming Busch's cause of death. Therefore, we leave this claim unrated.
  • Snopes will update this report if, or when, additional information surfaces. We contacted NASCAR, Busch's team Richard Childress Racing and his family to confirm his cause of death, and await replies to our queries.

In May 2026, after news of the death of two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch spread online, a claim (archived) circulated that Busch died of double pneumonia.

NASCAR, Busch's team Richard Childress Racing and the Busch family jointly announced the 41-year-old father of two's death on May 21, 2026.

One X account that shared the claim that Busch died of double pneumonia wrote that the suspected cause of death was "confirmed."

The claim also spread on Facebook (archived) and Reddit (archived). Snopes readers searched our site for more information about Busch.

We found no evidence Busch died of double pneumonia. The joint statement by NASCAR, Richard Childress Racing and Busch's family only mentioned that Busch was "hospitalized with a severe illness" on May 21, 2026, the same day he died.

We contacted NASCAR, Richard Childress Racing and Busch's family to ask if they could comment on Busch's cause of death. We await replies to our queries.

In the meantime, due to a lack of primary evidence from credible sources, we leave the claim that Busch died of double pneumonia unrated.

It was unclear where the claim originated. One account that shared the claim also claimed Busch died of hantavirus. The owner of that account told Snopes via Instagram that the posts were satire and that they first saw claims about Busch dying of double pneumonia on Reddit.

Busch suffered 'sinus cold' week before death

Busch's official cause of death remained unconfirmed by credible, primary sources at the time of this writing.

During a May 10, 2026, Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International in New York, commentators noted that Busch had been battling a "sinus cold" (video time code 1:40:55) that week and had asked for medical attention after the race.

A broadcast of Busch's radio communications during the race revealed he asked for a doctor named "Bill Heisel" because he, Busch, would need "a shot" after the race (time code 1:41:09). It was unclear what kind of shot Busch asked for or received and whether it was related to the alleged sinus cold or another health issue.

Then, on May 21, 2026, Busch's family posted a statement (archived) on his X account that read:

Kyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization. He is currently undergoing treatment and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation.

Later that same day, NASCAR, Richard Childress Racing and the Busch family announced that Busch had died.

The Associated Press reported, citing anonymous sources, that Busch died after he "became unresponsive" while testing in a Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord, North Carolina, on May 20 and was taken to a hospital in Charlotte.

Snopes has not independently verified this report and does not rely on anonymous sources.

The joint NASCAR statement described Busch as a "generational talent" and "one of the sport's greatest drivers."

During a 22-season full-time career, Busch won two Cup Series titles (in 2015 and 2019) and 63 races, NASCAR said. He also won "102 victories in what is now called the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and 69 wins in the Craftsman Truck Series."

The company described Busch's career as "record-setting." His wins reportedly ranked ninth on the Cup Series all-time win list. NASCAR said Busch's most recent win came on June 4, 2023, at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.

Busch is survived by his wife Samantha Busch, an 11-year-old son and a four-year-old daughter. His older brother, Kurt Busch, is a NASCAR Hall of Famer who retired in 2022.
