Power Outage at Ford Field Delays Girls Flag Football Championship
A power outage in downtown Detroit has led to the postponement of the Michigan Girls High School Flag Football League state championship tournament, originally set to take place at Ford Field. The venue announced, "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Michigan girls high school flag football championship will be postponed to a later date. Ford Field is currently experiencing power connection issues that are affecting the ability to open the stadium at this time. Participating teams will be made aware of the makeup dates and times for the games."
The tournament was scheduled to kick off with Wyandotte Roosevelt facing Wayne Memorial at 8 a.m., followed by several other matchups throughout the day, including Goodrich against Flint Carman-Ainsworth and Bloomfield Hills playing Warren Woods-Tower.
This postponement is expected to impact many teams, as Saturday is a particularly hectic day in the Michigan high school sports scene. The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) is simultaneously hosting state finals for track and field and district championships for baseball and softball, among other sports, creating potential scheduling conflicts for athletes.
Many players involved in flag football are also engaged in track, softball, and soccer, raising concerns about their availability due to the overlapping events spurred by the power outage. This year marks the fourth spring in which the Lions have supported a girls flag football season, a league that has seen its number of participating teams grow from 41 to 80 since 2026.
