Protests Erupt at CIF Track and Field Championships Over Transgender Athlete Participation

Protesters gathered outside Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday prior to the CIF Track and Field Championships, expressing their opposition to a transgender athlete competing in girls' events. The focus of the protests was 17-year-old AB Hernandez, a Southern California competitor who identifies as transgender and participated in three girls' events during the meet.

Critics of Hernandez's inclusion in the competition argued that it results in an unequal playing field. "The male body, in the case of sports, they're superior, right? We can see it today in the track meet: he can jump farther, jump higher, run faster," stated Beth Bourne, a protester voicing concerns about Hernandez's participation.

During the preliminary events held on Friday, Hernandez qualified for three events and achieved first place in two of them on Saturday. In the triple jump, Hernandez surpassed the nearest competitor by an impressive 17 and one-quarter inches, as well as leading in the long jump by six and a quarter inches. Additionally, Hernandez tied for fourth place in the high jump.

Supporters of Hernandez countered the criticisms by emphasizing that the athlete's success is a result of hard work and commitment, rather than an inherent advantage. They referenced CIF regulations that state transgender athletes cannot displace cisgender athletes in placements. "Trans athletes cannot displace any cisgender athletes per CIF rules. They can't take a placement. They can't take a podium spot. She is just there to play," explained Daisy Gardner, a family friend of Hernandez.

The demonstrations at the championship highlighted the ongoing national conversation regarding the participation of transgender athletes in school sports, while competition continued inside the venue.
