PWHL Detroit Expands Roster with New Signings

As the PWHL Detroit team continues to build its roster, general manager Manon Rheaume has finalized the signing of five players, marking a significant step in the expansion process. The team wrapped up Phase 2 of its formation on June 8, ahead of the upcoming annual entry draft scheduled for June 17 in Detroit. Alongside Detroit, three additional teams—Hamilton, Las Vegas, and San Jose—are also entering the league this season.

Among the latest additions is Jesse Compher, a forward who is well-acquainted with Detroit's hockey landscape as the sister of Red Wings player J.T. Compher. The 27-year-old from Illinois has signed a three-year contract after spending the last three seasons with the Toronto Sceptres. While she had a standout second season with nine goals and nine assists, her performance declined in the most recent season, finishing with six goals and six assists. Compher's familiarity with her new teammates, including those from her college and national teams, is expected to aid her transition.

Another significant signing is Britta Curl-Salemme, who joined the team on June 5 with a three-year deal. The North Dakota native previously played for the Minnesota Frost and has established herself as one of the league's top scorers, netting 11 goals and 18 assists last season. However, Curl-Salemme has faced controversy over her social media activity, particularly around trans athlete advocacy, which led to public backlash. Following criticism, she issued an apology acknowledging the pain caused by her actions, but she remains determined to embrace the passion of her fans, even when facing boos on the road.

Detroit also acquired Cayla Barnes and Hannah Bilka from the Seattle Torrent, both of whom played for Boston College before transferring to Ohio State in 2023. Barnes, a California native, signed a three-year deal, while Bilka, hailing from Texas, agreed to a two-year contract. Both players contributed to Team USA's gold medal victory in February, adding valuable experience to the roster.

Lastly, Daryl Watts, the first player signed by PWHL Detroit, solidified her position with a groundbreaking four-year contract, the longest in league history. Watts, who previously played for the Toronto Sceptres, secured a salary of at least $100,000, a significant increase from her last season's earnings. With 32 career goals, she ranks second in PWHL history, making her a pivotal asset for the new franchise.
