Rain Delays 2026 RIIL Division II Boys Tennis Championship
PAWTUCKET – After facing disappointment in last year's Division II Boys Tennis Championship, the Prout Crusaders arrived at Slater Park ready to seize victory. However, they will have to wait a little longer for that title.
During the final match against North Smithfield, Prout was in a favorable position, leading 2-1, with two matches looking promising. Unfortunately, a sudden rainstorm forced a halt to the competition, postponing the match until Monday.
Due to a men's league event scheduled at Slater Park, the teams will now continue their contest at East Providence High School, set to resume at 4:30 p.m. following the Division III championship match between top-seeded Warwick and No. 3 Providence Country Day.
The 2026 RIIL Tennis Championships had initially been planned for Saturday, but inclement weather wiped out all matches, pushing the games to Sunday. The State Championship featured East Greenwich defeating Barrington 4-1, which caused delays for the Division II match.
Despite the interruptions, Prout remained focused. They kicked off with a win from Lawson Graybill at No. 4 singles, and Nico Testa followed with a victory at No. 1 singles. North Smithfield managed to narrow the gap with a win from Ben Cuddy and Alex Sevegny at No. 3 doubles. At the time of the stoppage, Prout was leading in three matches, with Luke Cavanagh ahead 6-4, 5-3 at No. 2 singles, and the top doubles team of Wilson Babij and Brady Kopka leading 6-4, 5-4. Meanwhile, Jack Paiva and Alex Demos made a comeback at No. 2 doubles, taking a 2-6, 6-1, 3-1 advantage. North Smithfield's Oliver Drolet had won his first set at No. 3 but was trailing 4-3 in the second.
