Rain Halts Division III Softball Winner’s Bracket Final

PROVIDENCE — The outcome of the Division III softball winner’s bracket final remains undetermined as inclement weather forced a suspension of play on Sunday night. The game, featuring Tiverton and Rogers, was called off in the bottom of the third inning at Rhode Island College, with the Tigers leading the Vikings 6-5. The contest was paused with two outs and no runners on base, as Lia Doster faced a full count.

Rain had begun impacting gameplay, making it challenging for pitchers to maintain a proper grip on the ball, and mud was accumulating around the bases. As the clock approached 10 p.m., remaining spectators quickly departed as officials made the decision to halt the match.

Tiverton showcased a strong comeback, with Morgan DiManno hitting a run-scoring triple to center field and Abby Gilfillen contributing an RBI groundout in the third inning, turning a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 advantage. Earlier, Sarah Poland's RBI single and a pair of runs from an error helped Tiverton recover from an early 4-0 disadvantage.

Rogers had made an impressive start during the first inning, with Jazelle Ramons delivering a two-run triple, bringing in courtesy runner Catalina Schroder and Charlotte Plowden, while a safety squeeze by Alexandra Brown added another run in the second inning.

Due to the weather, there was a 40-minute delay in the Division I matchup between La Salle and Chariho, but the rain held off during the Division II game, where Lincoln triumphed over Johnston with a score of 7-3. Consequently, the match between Tiverton and Rogers commenced approximately 90 minutes later than the originally scheduled 7 p.m. start time. Academic commitments for Tiverton’s seniors preclude resuming the game on Monday, leaving the next steps uncertain. Interscholastic League officials are expected to announce a new time for the game on Monday morning.

Rogers 410 – 5 4 3; Tiverton 123 – 6 5 2; Lila Leys and Nora Gardullo. Lia Doster, Liliana Luis (2), and Abby Gilfillen.
