Rams Players Eagerly Anticipate Aaron Donald's Possible Return Alongside Myles Garrett

Aaron Donald's future remains uncertain as the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year has yet to announce whether he will continue his retirement or return to the Los Angeles Rams. Despite this ambiguity, excitement is building among Rams players regarding the prospect of Donald's comeback. "When you have a guy that’s that serious about even considering coming out, it’s like ‘OK, we might have a chance,’” safety Quentin Lake remarked after a recent organized team workout.

The buzz around Donald, 35, intensified following the Rams' significant offseason acquisition of defensive end Myles Garrett. The potential of pairing Donald with Garrett, who is also a two-time defensive player of the year, has captured the attention of both players and fans alike. Defensive lineman Kobie Turner emphasized that the decision rests solely with Donald but acknowledged the excitement such a duo would bring. “To just have two historic, if you will, defensive players on that line together… I think that would be cool for L.A.,” he said.

Defensive coordinator Chris Shula expressed his enthusiasm for Donald's potential return, stating, “Would love to have him back — with open arms.” Shula is entering his third year leading a revamped defense, bolstered by recent trades and signings, including All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie and Garrett. Whether or not Donald joins them, the Rams are considered strong contenders for Super Bowl LXI, scheduled for February at SoFi Stadium.

Despite the optimism surrounding Donald's possible return, Lake cautioned against assuming that his presence alone would guarantee success. “Some people say if he were to come back, just hand the Lombardi to us on a silver platter — but that’s never the case,” he noted. "It would be a fun year, I’ll say that.” With quarterback Matthew Stafford leading the offense and a fortified defense, the Rams are positioning themselves for another shot at the championship.

In a recent trade, the Rams sent edge rusher Jared Verse, along with future draft picks, to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Garrett, who has achieved an impressive 125½ sacks over nine seasons. While losing Verse was a tough blow, Lake reflected positively on the trade, saying, “You give a great player to get a great player,” and added that they are fortunate to have one of the best in the game.

As the Rams prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Garrett and the potential return of Donald could create a formidable defensive line, one that could shift the dynamics of opposing offenses. “You just talk about mentality,” McDuffie remarked, highlighting how a player like Garrett can change the game. With Donald's legacy of 111 sacks, his return would undoubtedly enhance that mentality.
