Reds Struggle Continues with Defeat Against Cardinals

ST. LOUIS – The Cincinnati Reds embarked on a road trip under challenging circumstances, beginning the day without a pitching coach and losing their manager during the game. Their weekend opener against the St. Louis Cardinals ended in a disappointing 10-3 defeat, marking a dismal 2-11 record in divisional play this season, even before facing the top-ranked Milwaukee Brewers.

The Reds, who started April in a strong position at the top of the National League Central, have seen their fortunes decline sharply. With a struggling offense and one of the most ineffective bullpens in the league, they risk falling further behind in the standings as they face a six-game road stretch, including a trip to San Diego next.

Errors from rookie shortstop Edwin Arroyo and first baseman Sal Stewart in the first inning led to two unearned runs, quickly erasing the Reds' early 3-0 advantage. The situation escalated when manager Terry Francona was ejected following a failed replay challenge, which Stewart initiated after being called off the bag on a potential inning-ending groundout.

The Cardinals tied the game in the third inning with a homer from Alec Burleson off pitcher Brady Singer, who struggled and was unable to complete the fifth. Another unearned run in the fifth, due to a wild pickoff attempt from Brock Burke, allowed St. Louis to take the lead. The sixth inning proved disastrous for the Reds as rookie Zach Maxwell and almost-rookie Luis Mey allowed the Cardinals to score six runs, exacerbating the Reds’ woes.

Despite a promising start, going 2-for-3 with runners in scoring position during the first inning, the Reds failed to capitalize afterward, not placing another runner in scoring position until the seventh, where he was left stranded. This loss marks the Reds' sixth in eight games and their 20th defeat since the end of April, highlighting a troubling downward trend for the once-promising team.
