Reds Struggle in Division Play, Suffer Defeat Against Cardinals
ST. LOUIS – The Cincinnati Reds began their road trip in disarray, missing both their pitching coach and their manager for significant portions of the game. A disappointing 10-3 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals marked the start of a challenging weekend series, leaving the Reds with a dismal 2-11 record within their division this season. This loss comes just before their matchup against first-place Milwaukee.
Once a formidable contender in the National League Central, the Reds have seen their performance decline sharply since April. Struggling with a lackluster batting lineup and one of the league's weakest bullpens, the team appears to be on the verge of falling behind in the competitive division.
Errors by rookie shortstop Edwin Arroyo and first baseman Sal Stewart in the first inning set the tone for the game, leading to two unearned runs for the Cardinals and diminishing the Reds' early 3-0 lead. Manager Terry Francona was ejected shortly after following an unsuccessful challenge regarding Stewart's play, which had the potential to end the inning.
The Cardinals made their comeback in the third inning with a leadoff homer from Alec Burleson, and a fifth-inning error from pitcher Brock Burke allowed St. Louis to take the lead. The Reds' bullpen struggled immensely during a disastrous sixth inning, where Zach Maxwell and Luis Mey combined to give up six runs, including multiple walks and a hit batter, further burying the team.
Despite starting strong with a 2-for-3 effort with runners in scoring position during the first inning, the Reds failed to replicate that success, not advancing another player into scoring position until the seventh, where they left a runner stranded. While the Cardinals entered the weekend having lost 10 of their last 15 games and not winning a series in three weeks, the Reds added to their own woes, marking their sixth loss in eight games and their 20th since the end of April.
