Ridge Lovett Triumphs Over Olympic Medalist Punia at RAF 09 in Dallas

DALLAS, TX - In an impressive display of skill and determination, Ridge Lovett of the University of Nebraska secured a significant victory over Bajrang Punia, an Olympic bronze medalist, during the Real American Freestyle (RAF) event held on Saturday night. This event has gained recognition for its exciting format, akin to UFC-style cards, showcasing elite freestyle wrestling talent.

Lovett, who has already earned a spot in the upcoming Final X competition in June at 70 kg, faced Punia, a distinguished wrestler from India with five World and Olympic medals to his name. The match began with Lovett taking an early lead, scoring a single-leg takedown and a shot-clock point to establish a 3-0 advantage. He further extended his lead to 7-0 in the second period before Punia showcased his experience with a four-point score. However, Lovett quickly countered and maintained control, ultimately winning the match with a score of 13-8.

With his sights set on the Final X showdown against former World Champion Zain Retherford, Lovett has been on an impressive winning streak. After claiming the US Open title and a gold medal at the Pan-American Championships earlier this season, he boasts a 10-1 record at the Senior level, with his only defeat coming against Kazakhstan’s Maiis Aliyev.

In another match, Christopher Minto, competing at Middleweight, faced Jason Nolf, a three-time NCAA Champion. Despite taking the match on short notice, Minto demonstrated commendable resilience but ultimately lost 8-5. His performance against Nolf, one of the top wrestlers in the country, certainly caught the attention of spectators.

Antrell Taylor also competed in the Lightweight category, going up against Zain Retherford. After stepping in on short notice, Taylor struggled to find his footing against Retherford’s solid defense, resulting in an 8-0 defeat. As Taylor prepares for his senior season, he is likely to focus on refining his folkstyle technique, with aspirations for future national and international competition.
