Riverheads Triumphs Over Luray to Capture Region 1B Baseball Championship

GREENVILLE — In a decisive showdown on June 4, Riverheads emerged victorious with a 4-1 win against Luray to secure the Region 1B baseball title. The Gladiators are set to host a Class 1 state quarterfinal match against Lancaster, the Region 1A runner-up, on Tuesday, June 9. "Everybody did a part," remarked Riverheads senior Brody Phillips. "We struggled through the middle of the game, but we managed to find a way in the end."

Riverheads (19-4) quickly established an early advantage, scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to Kendal Edwards' single that drove in both Phillips and Ethan Mulcahy. Coach Rodney Painter noted that this early scoring helped ease the pressure on freshman pitcher Cason Croft, allowing him to pitch confidently into the second inning.

Luray responded with a run in the third and created a tense situation in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with only one out. However, Riverheads’ junior relief pitcher Asher Falls entered the game and skillfully navigated the crisis, achieving an out via a sacrifice, followed by a strikeout and an unusual call of batter interference on Luray's Eli Wood to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Riverheads capitalized on the momentum, adding two more runs. Chase Donathan doubled to score Phillips before reaching third on a passed ball and crossing home plate on a bunt by Holden Fitzgerald. Luray could not mount a comeback in the seventh, going down in order with three straight outs.

Cason Croft secured the win for Riverheads, pitching five innings while allowing just three hits. Falls closed the game with two hitless innings, striking out two batters, including the final out. Luray’s Eli Wood, despite the loss, delivered a strong performance, striking out nine in a complete game effort. The Bulldogs are scheduled to face Region 1A champion Rappahannock in their state quarterfinal match on June 9. Riverheads heads into the state tournament having won seven of their last eight games.
