Rookie Tight End Lance Mason Aims for Seahawks Roster Spot
The Seattle Seahawks are gearing up for an intriguing competition for their fourth tight end position this preseason, with undrafted free agent Lance Mason vying for a chance to make the final roster. As the team prepares for the NFL opener in Week 1, Mason could potentially outshine veterans to secure a spot. AJ Barner is expected to take the lead as the starting tight end, while Elijah Arroyo is positioned as a reliable backup. Eric Saubert, who played a significant role last season, is currently the third tight end, creating an opportunity for three tight ends to make the cut.
With the Seahawks currently listing six tight ends, they will need to narrow that number down to four for the 53-man roster. This leaves room for either Mason, Nick Kallerup, or Harrison Bryant to claim the final spot. Bryant, a six-year veteran, appeared in 12 games last season with the Houston Texans, catching four passes on six targets. Kallerup, a 2025 undrafted free agent from Minnesota, showcased impressive potential last preseason, participating in nine regular season games but without any receiving statistics.
Both Kallerup and Bryant present distinct skill sets, with Kallerup being more focused on blocking, while Bryant is recognized for his receiving capabilities. Their similar height of 6'5" does not translate to comparable skills, making the competition for the final tight end spot even more fascinating. If Mason can demonstrate superior performance during the preseason, he may shift the dynamics of this competition.
The Seahawks will have to decide if they prioritize a blocking specialist or a receiving threat for their fourth tight end role, which could influence their choice between Kallerup and Bryant. Having signed with Seattle shortly after the draft, Bryant may provide mentorship to Mason, who shares a similar receiving-first profile. To have a chance at surpassing Kallerup, Mason would need to replicate Kallerup’s successful preseason this year. If he can match Kallerup’s blocking ability and Bryant’s receiving talent, Mason could very well emerge as the frontrunner for the position.
As new offensive coordinator Brian Fleury takes the reins, the Seahawks will look to his expertise in tight end development to inform their decision-making in this critical area.
