Samantha Bland Shines as Key Player for Huskers Softball in Oklahoma City

Samantha Bland is the quintessential player who embodies the spirit of the game—messy and lively, always ready to dive into action. Over her nearly three-year journey with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the only season she didn’t sport the school’s colors was her freshman year, when she stepped in to cover left field following an injury to teammate Abbie Squier. Now, as she takes on the responsibilities of playing third base, her uniforms are often a testament to her relentless effort, frequently covered in dirt.

Originally, I intended to write about Bland during the Big 10 Conference Tournament, where she earned 2nd-Team All-Big 10 honors and was named to the all-tournament team. However, it was her performance in a gripping game against Arkansas that prompted my decision to share her story. In that game, Bland went 2-for-4 at the plate, contributing to the Huskers’ critical 5-3 victory in 11 innings by driving in the first run and stealing a base.

Her defensive skills were on full display as well; she expertly fielded three ground balls and used her strong arm to catch two Arkansas runners. Bland’s diving catch of a low line drive in the third inning not only helped maintain the game’s balance but also earned her a spot on ESPN Sportscenter’s Top 10 Plays of the Day, highlighting her impact on the field.

Head Coach Rhonda Revelle appreciates Bland’s ability to keep opponents at bay while at third base, as well as her knack for creating chaos on the base paths. A memorable moment occurred in Minneapolis when, amidst confusion over a pitch, Bland seized the opportunity to steal second base while her teammate Bella Bacon inadvertently set off a chain reaction that ultimately led to a run for Nebraska.

Bland’s enthusiasm for the game is evident in her performance throughout the NCAA tournament. Since the start of the postseason, she has been batting an impressive .522, with multiple runs, stolen bases, and solid on-base percentage. Known for her streaky hitting, she has a keen eye for pitches, often making solid contact even in challenging situations.

As her family cheers her on from the stands, Bland continues to bring her infectious energy to the field, celebrating each teammate with unique handshakes and dances that have become a beloved tradition. With her remarkable dedication and performance, Samantha Bland is undeniably a standout player for the Huskers as they compete in Oklahoma City.
