Severe Winds Cause Injuries at WVU Baseball Event
During the Morgantown Super Regional baseball game on Saturday, several fans at West Virginia University were injured when strong winds toppled an event tent in a nearby parking area. A representative from West Virginia Athletics confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that the incident occurred amidst a weather delay during the match between the Mountaineers and Cal Poly.
"WVU would like to thank the immediate response of EMS, law enforcement and fire first responders who immediately secured the area and treated the injured spectators. While it was a great day for Mountaineer baseball, all of Mountaineer Nation’s thoughts are with those who were involved," the spokesperson stated.
The game was interrupted in the eighth inning due to severe weather, including thunderstorms and lightning, leading to a delay of over an hour and a half. According to the statement, five individuals were transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the unfortunate incident, the Mountaineers triumphed on the field with a decisive 17-1 victory over Cal Poly, completing the sweep of the Super Regional and securing a spot in their first-ever College World Series. West Virginia's next game will be against Troy, scheduled for either June 12 or June 13, with specific times yet to be announced by the NCAA.
