Shai Gilgeous-Alexander takes glass-half-full approach with Jalen Williams' latest injury
Going through some light shooting in pregame warmups, Jalen Williams should be sadly used to this routine. He plays a handful of games, looks awesome and then re-injures his hamstring and returns all the way back to square one.
For the fourth time in five months, Williams has sustained a hamstring injury. Two on each leg. The first two were on his right in the regular season. And these last two have been on his left in the NBA playoffs. You can't help but think there's a level of connectivity there. Perhaps some overcompensation as he tries to help out in their back-to-back title ambitions.
The latest injury happened in OKC's Game 2 win over the San Antonio Spurs. After looking like their best player in Game 1, Williams sustained a hamstring injury after the first quarter. His status remains strategically ambiguous, but that's rooted in gamesmanship as the Thunder don't want to reveal their hand in the 2026 Western Conference Finals.
For now, Williams is dealing with hamstring soreness. The Thunder will take a day-to-day approach. Questionable for Game 3, he was eventually ruled out. So far, his absence hasn't been costly. OKC's bench helped get a Game 3 win over the Spurs. The reigning NBA champions are 7-0 in the postseason without the All-NBA talent.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander detailed Williams' roller-coaster journey. There's been more downs than ups, albeit. Despite the frustrating year that stems back to him gutting out last year's championship quest through torn wrist ligaments, the reigning MVP believes his teammate has had a glass-half-full approach.
"I can't imagine what he's going through. Just all the injuries he's had. Barely been able to play. I know how much he loves the competition and the sport itself," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "As bad as it is, he's still super blessed in life in general. So many things are going for him. Bright kid, bright future, great family. So many kids don't even get the opportunity to play sports in their lives. And so many kids are born into poverty and things like that. It's always a bright side to things."
Yeah, I guess that makes sense when you completely zoom out. At the end of the day, this is just basketball. Yes, it's a silly sport that's turned into a billion-dollar, money-making machine, but many worse things in life could happen. For Williams, he gotta keep his head up and see this as a blip on the radar.
"Dub knows that. I don't have to remind him of that or anything like that. He's got a great head on his shoulder and he understands that," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "There's nothing you can do. All you can do is get better, work on your body and things like that. I have no doubt in my mind that Dub will be a better basketball player at the end of all this injury stuff."
