Shannon Pivovar Eager to Leverage Momentum as USD Softball's New Head Coach
VERMILLION — Shannon Pivovar is stepping into her new role as head coach of the University of South Dakota softball team, following a significant transition from her previous position at the University of Sioux Falls. With her coaching journey beginning in 2019, Pivovar spent four years as an assistant at South Dakota State, where she played a pivotal role in transforming the Jackrabbits into a formidable NCAA tournament contender. Now, she aims to elevate the Coyotes, who recently made history by reaching their first NCAA tournament.
Pivovar acknowledges the challenges she faced at Sioux Falls, where her team ended with a 109-113 record over five seasons. Reflecting on her past experiences, she stated, “I’ve told many people that the change from Sioux Falls to here was probably one of the biggest blessings in terms of my professional career.” She recognized the need for personal growth and the importance of adaptability in coaching. “It took me from those perfection moments to like, it’s a process. That transition was the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” she added.
Having worked alongside notable coaches like Krista Wood and Robert Wagner, Pivovar has gathered invaluable insights throughout her coaching career. She emphasized the significance of building relationships with players and fostering a positive environment. “I have re-found the joy in what I do,” she noted, highlighting that success often correlates with enjoying the game and working collaboratively.
Pivovar's new tenure comes on the heels of a remarkable season for the Coyotes, who entered the Summit League tournament as the fourth seed and achieved a surprising victory over top-seeded Omaha, ultimately claiming their first Summit League championship. Their NCAA debut was equally impressive, with a near upset against the national No. 1 Nebraska and a win against Louisville, gaining the team significant national recognition.
Now, Pivovar is focused on maintaining the momentum and continuity within the team. She expressed optimism about retaining the core of the roster and the recruits who committed to USD prior to her appointment. “We have the right people, we have support, we have a little bit of a known name now,” she said, emphasizing her commitment to building on the program's recent successes.
