Shawnee Heights Baseball Showcases Resilience in Class 5A Championship Defeat
WICHITA — The Shawnee Heights baseball team concluded their remarkable season on Saturday, May 30, facing a 4-0 defeat against St. Thomas Aquinas in the Class 5A State Championship. This loss marked the third consecutive title for St. Thomas Aquinas. “It just wasn’t our day,” reflected Shawnee Heights head coach Jason Brown. “We hit some balls hard, we couldn’t find holes and they did. It's the way baseball works sometimes.”
Coach Brown emphasized the team's unwavering character, which shone through as they navigated various challenges throughout the season. Shawnee Heights consistently demonstrated their ability to adapt and overcome obstacles, both on and off the field. This week, the team faced multiple weather-related delays, adjusting their schedules as needed. “They have gotten better as baseball players, but it’s their character,” Brown stated. “We got in here on Thursday and we were ready to go. Then I had to tell them that they were canceling it. We went to the mall for a while and had a blast. It doesn't matter what happens, weather, different formats, they were ready to go every time that they stepped on the field.”
In the championship match, the Thunderbirds managed only two hits against a formidable performance from Lincoln Boyle of St. Thomas Aquinas, an Arkansas baseball commit, who allowed just one hit and struck out seven batters. Despite the offensive struggles, Shawnee Heights' defense and pitching kept them competitive. Cambren Floberg took the mound, pitching five innings with four strikeouts, allowing two earned runs and eight hits during the game. “Flo was good, Flo was really good on the mound today," noted Brown. "Our defense, like always, was solid.”
In just his second year as head coach, Brown has led the team to a state runner-up finish, marking their first appearance in a state title game since 2016. This was also the eighth time the program reached the state championship. “Win or lose, this is a special class,” Brown said. "It's been a long time since Shawnee Heights had been in this game, and I'm so proud of them.”
This season highlights the team's growth and determination, showcasing their spirit even in defeat.
