The 2024 IPL season saw Shubman Gill replacing Hardik Pandya as captain of the Gujarat Titans. 

Over two seasons, Gill captained GT in 40 matches. While the team won 23 of those, they faced defeat in 15. Two games ended without a result due to rain.

Gill led the India side in the ODI series against Australia in October 2025. His captaincy debut in ODIs did not go as planned, as India lost the series 2-1. Stand-in captain KL Rahul had to lead India during the South Africa series.

He came back from injury and led India in the ODI series against NZ in January but once again they lost the series 2-1.

Has Shubman Gill captained in Tests?

Gill took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma in the away India vs. England series. After four Tests, India levelled the series 2-2 with only their third-ever win at the Oval in the fifth Test - a fitting end to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Despite dominating most sessions in the four Tests, India failed to win the match-deciding phases as they crumbled under pressure.

The young man also won his first Test as captain at home, as India registered a dominating victory against the West Indies by an innings and 140 runs. India went on to seal the series with the match stretching to the final day.
