Steelers writer hints at status of QB competition

One week of OTAs are in the books and all the talk with the Pittsburgh Steelers is about the quarterback position. More specifically the quarterback competition between Will Howard and Drew Allar. As the two young quarterbacks on the roster, Pittsburgh is investing heavily in these two in hopes that one of them will show enough promise to hand the starting job to them.

Steelers writer Mike DeFabo took to X and asked the question of who the odd-man our would be and the response from beat writer James Wexell was telling as he hinted the competition isn't close and gives the impression that it's the rookie Allar is well behind Howard.

The Steelers selected Allar in the third round of the 2026 NFL draft but there are no guarantees Allar will make the team. By all accounts, Howard has been the better player and Allar's problems with lower-body mechanics have followed him to the NFL.

It's obvious far too early to be definitive about anything but with each chunk of team activities the Steelers do, Allar's opportunities to justify keeping him on the roster, even if it means keeping four quarterbacks on the final 53-man roster.
