Stephen A. Smith Urges Trump to Skip Knicks Game, Fears Disruption to Atmosphere

ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith expressed strong disapproval of President Donald Trump attending the upcoming NBA Finals game between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden, citing concerns over the game's "vibe." Smith reiterated his sentiments on his SiriusXM show, stating, "I don’t want him there," and urged the president to reconsider his plans for the event.

In a heated exchange on social media, Smith responded to criticism from an X user who questioned his objection to Trump's presence while seemingly accepting New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's attendance. Smith fired back, asserting, "Grow the Hell up! I have a problem with any politician — any politician — that shows up, causes delays and interferes with these watch parties buzzing all over NYC. It’s not political." He emphasized that the focus should remain on the Knicks and the city's energy during the game.

Smith's comments gained traction online after he voiced his concerns, which he elaborated on in a viral video clip. "He’s coming to Game three of the Finals, and I don’t want him there. It has nothing to do with politics, policy, or anything like that. It has everything to do with him," he stated.

The Knicks have cautioned fans to arrive two hours early due to increased security measures in light of Trump's attendance announcement. Governor Kathy Hochul recently attempted to poke fun at Trump’s Knicks fandom, but her jab fell flat when she mistakenly referenced the wrong championship year.

Additionally, Knicks backup center Mitchell Robinson expressed enthusiasm about Trump's presence, responding positively to a fan's TikTok video about the excitement surrounding the game. Game 3 is set to tip off at 8:30 p.m. ET, with the Knicks leading the series 2-0.
