Stevenson High School Community Celebrates Jalen Brunson's NBA Finals Journey

As the New York Knicks make their mark in the NBA Finals, many in Chicago are proudly supporting one of their own, Jalen Brunson. The talented point guard, who honed his skills at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, has captured the hearts of local fans, especially with his father, Rick Brunson, serving as an assistant coach for the Knicks. This historic pairing marks the first time a father has coached his son in the NBA Finals.

Brunson’s journey began at Stevenson, where his father was an assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls. His ties to the school remain strong, having led the basketball team to a state championship and even proposing to his wife in the school gym. On Monday, the current Stevenson basketball team practiced in the gym that once echoed with Brunson’s own shots more than a decade ago. His legacy is commemorated with a retired jersey and accolades displayed on the gym walls.

“It means so much to coaches and our school. We're so proud of him, not just for his achievements on the court, but for the person he has become,” said Paul Swan, an assistant coach at Stevenson. His high school coach, Pat Ambrose, emphasized that Brunson's character surpasses even his remarkable skills as a player.

Mike McGraw, a sports reporter who covered Brunson during his high school career, praised his humility and kindness. “He’s just humble, polite, and a genuinely nice person,” McGraw noted, further highlighting Brunson's commitment to family and community. Brunson and his wife, Ali Mark, also a Stevenson alum, have established a scholarship fund to support local students.

WCIU Sports Director Kenny McReynolds, who has followed Brunson’s career closely, remarked on his exceptional basketball IQ, suggesting he sees the game in a unique way. “He sees plays three moves ahead—he’s playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers,” McReynolds said.

This summer, Brunson plans to host his annual basketball camp, although it will be slightly delayed due to his current commitments in the NBA Finals. With his roots firmly planted in Lincolnshire, Jalen Brunson continues to inspire his community while making history on the court.
