Tensions Erupt in Paris as 45 Arrested During PSG Title Celebrations

PARIS (AP) — Following the excitement of Paris Saint-Germain's recent victory in the Champions League, police in Paris arrested 45 individuals amid incidents of violence that marred the celebrations on Saturday night. The unrest escalated when a group attempted to breach a police station in the city.

Fans took to the streets to celebrate PSG's thrilling win over Arsenal in Budapest, where the match concluded with a penalty shootout. As jubilant supporters filled the streets near the Arc de Triomphe, flares were ignited and car horns echoed throughout the city. Approximately 20,000 revelers gathered on the iconic Champs-Elysees, prompting police to manage the large crowd.

Despite the initial festivities, the Paris police prefecture reported that smaller factions engaged in disruptive behavior at various locations, including vandalizing shops and starting fires. One police officer sustained injuries during the chaos. Authorities intervened as a group attempted to storm a police station in the upscale 8th Arrondissement but were swiftly dispersed.

By 10 p.m., law enforcement had taken 45 individuals into custody. The main ring road around Paris experienced a temporary blockade by celebratory crowds before police restored order. Additionally, damage was reported at a bakery and a restaurant. Officers also managed to clear around 1,000 people who had gathered near the PSG stadium in the 16th Arrondissement, dismantling barricades made of bicycles.

In May of the previous year, similar celebrations led to more than 500 arrests across France after PSG's first Champions League title, prompting heightened security measures with 8,000 police deployed throughout the city.
