The Disconnect Between Sports Teams and Sports Radio During Pride Month

As June commences, it marks the 27th anniversary of nationwide acknowledgment of Pride Month, a time dedicated to honoring the Stonewall Uprising of 1969. While this month is celebrated by many, it remains a point of contention across various communities and political spheres in the United States.

In recent years, professional sports leagues and teams have increasingly embraced Pride Month, often sparking discussions and sometimes controversy on social media. Many organizations engage in various activities like logo alterations, promotional campaigns, and events to commemorate this time. However, a noticeable gap exists between the enthusiastic participation of sports teams and the often muted response from sports radio stations across the country.

This contrast is particularly striking in cities where local teams and radio stations share the same audience. For instance, the San Francisco Giants actively promoted Pride Month on social media, proclaiming their commitment to inclusivity and support for the LGBTQ+ community. In stark contrast, local sports radio outlets such as KNBR and 95.7 The Game refrained from making any similar acknowledgments.

While the dynamics of each market can differ, the pattern of engagement—or lack thereof—remains consistent. This June, 29 out of 30 Major League Baseball stadiums will host Pride Night events, showcasing their commitment to celebrating diversity. Despite this, many sports radio stations choose to bypass such observances entirely, maintaining a status quo that neglects the importance of these initiatives.

It’s essential to recognize that this disconnect isn’t limited to Pride Month alone; it extends to other significant observances like Black History Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, where professional sports teams typically take an active role while radio stations lag behind.

The essence of sports radio has always been about fostering a connection with the community. To truly resonate with their audience, these stations must engage with the issues and celebrations that matter to their listeners. As sports organizations have embraced this responsibility, it's time for sports radio to follow suit, ensuring they don't miss out on opportunities to connect and uplift their communities.
