Tigers' Strategic Signing of Drew Anderson Emerges as Trade Asset

In the world of Major League Baseball, it's not uncommon for players to transition from leagues in Asia back to the U.S. each offseason. This year, Detroit Tigers pitcher Drew Anderson stands out as a notable returnee after spending last season in South Korea's KBO league. What initially seemed like a savvy acquisition for a team eyeing a playoff push is now shaping up to have significant implications ahead of the August 3 trade deadline.

At 32 years old, Anderson has made a solid impact on the Tigers, posting a 2-2 record with a 3.62 ERA (117 ERA+) across 19 appearances. He has recorded 46 strikeouts in 37.1 innings of work, proving to be a worthwhile investment for Detroit, especially considering his $7 million salary for 2026 and a $10 million team option for the following year.

Upon signing with the Tigers in December, Anderson was eager to apply the skills he honed in Korea back in the MLB. Having previously played for teams like the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and Chicago White Sox from 2017 to 2021, he saw Detroit as a prime opportunity to contribute to a team with playoff aspirations following consecutive American League Division Series exits in 2024 and 2025.

However, the season has not gone as planned for the Tigers, who have struggled significantly, losing 21 of their last 25 games and sinking to a 22-38 record, the poorest in the American League. As the playoffs draw closer, the Tigers find themselves in a challenging position, with FanGraphs indicating only the Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels having slimmer postseason chances.

If the Tigers opt to make trades before the deadline, Anderson could be an attractive option for teams in need of bullpen support. Although he may not replicate his stellar KBO performance from last season, where he boasted a 12-7 record and a 2.25 ERA with 245 strikeouts, he still presents a better option than many of his counterparts. His potential trade could offer the Tigers an opportunity to enhance their roster for future seasons while not sacrificing their immediate 2026 goals.
