Trail Blazers Eyeing All-Star Talent Amid Giannis Pursuit

The Portland Trail Blazers are reportedly in the mix for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar, as they seek to enhance their roster for the upcoming NBA season. A notable advantage for Portland in this pursuit is the presence of Antetokounmpo's former teammates, Jrue Holiday and Damian Lillard, who both share a history with the two-time MVP.

This past season saw the Blazers showing promise despite several injuries sidelining key players. Their interest in acquiring Antetokounmpo aligns with hopes of reuniting him with Holiday and Lillard, both of whom played significant roles during their time together in Milwaukee. Notably, Antetokounmpo and Holiday celebrated an NBA championship in 2021 during their first season as teammates.

Holiday's departure from the Bucks came about in a three-team trade in 2023 that interestingly included Lillard moving to Milwaukee. However, the Bucks have struggled since, facing early playoff exits in the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The highlight of the Giannis-Lillard partnership thus far was securing the NBA Cup in 2024.

Despite the Blazers' interest, they will encounter considerable competition, particularly from teams within the Eastern Conference, as reports indicate that Antetokounmpo may prefer to stay in that division. Meanwhile, the Bucks' strategy remains uncertain, with the option to offer Antetokounmpo a maximum contract by October 1 or allow him to enter free agency after the 2026-27 season.

If the Blazers are unsuccessful in acquiring Antetokounmpo, they have a backup plan in place. They are considering a trade for Anthony Davis, a player who was once seen as Antetokounmpo's rival in the Western Conference before injuries hampered his career. Currently with the Washington Wizards after a trade from the Dallas Mavericks, Davis has expressed enthusiasm about his new role and the potential of the Wizards' young roster, which is poised to select first overall in the upcoming draft.
