UFC Set to Revamp Rankings System Amid Dana White's Ongoing Concerns
In recent years, Dana White, the president of the UFC, has voiced persistent frustrations regarding the organization’s rankings system. He has frequently criticized the reliance on media-voted rankings, claiming they often do not accurately reflect the true performance and status of fighters within their respective divisions. A notable instance of this occurred in October 2024, when White expressed discontent after Khalil Rountree Jr. retained his No. 8 ranking in the light heavyweight category, despite a commendable showing against Alex Pereira at UFC 307.
White has also been vocal about the pound-for-pound rankings, arguing that Jon Jones deserves the top spot over Islam Makhachev, especially while Jones is still an active competitor. This criticism resurfaced after UFC Paris in 2024, when Renato Moicano's impressive finish of Benoît Saint-Denis did not elevate him from his No. 11 position in the lightweight rankings, prompting both Moicano and White to publicly denounce the current system. White has gone so far as to label the journalists responsible for these rankings as "bums."
In light of these ongoing issues, White has begun to seek technological solutions to enhance the rankings process. He disclosed that he has had discussions with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the possibility of integrating artificial intelligence to eliminate biases and external influences from the rankings.
During the broadcast of UFC Vegas 118, commentator Brendan Fitzgerald revealed that a new ranking model is in the works, aiming to base rankings on concrete performance metrics rather than subjective opinions. Fitzgerald stated, “A new UFC ranking system is currently being developed that will be based on measurable performance, not opinion, not popularity.” The goal is to assess fighters by their competition strength, activity levels, and consistency.
The redesigned system will focus on objective data rather than the opinions of human voters, which White has criticized for their inconsistencies. Despite discussions with companies like IBM and Meta regarding potential AI-driven solutions, no definitive timeline has been established for the rollout of this new ranking system. While the UFC has historically allowed media input in ranking decisions, the organization retains ultimate control over matchmaking and title opportunities, suggesting that while the influence of popularity may lessen, the promotion’s authority will remain intact.
