Urban Meyer Reflects on Ohio State-Michigan Rivalry's Significance

The annual clash between Ohio State and Michigan stirs emotions year-round, especially for those deeply involved, according to former Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer. Having ended his Ohio State coaching career with an impeccable 7-0 record against the Wolverines, Meyer has emphasized that the fate of each season largely depended on conquering their arch-rivals.

In a recent appearance on "The Script" podcast, Meyer elaborated on his unwavering focus on the rivalry, stating, "I made that whole facility all about that game." He recalled that preparation for the Wolverines began long before the traditional fall matchup, with assistant coach Tim Hinton dedicated to analyzing game film as early as spring practices.

For Meyer, the rivalry transcends mere competition; it is deeply personal. "There's no — name another person who respects that school more than I do. And I'm including probably some people who have gone there," he asserted, highlighting his friendships with legendary Michigan coaches such as Bo Schembechler and Lloyd Carr.

However, Meyer expressed concern over Michigan's recent struggles, which he believes have tarnished the rivalry's reputation. "What’s gone on the last four or five years has taken a little bit of a hit," he remarked, indicating that off-field issues have overshadowed the program’s football legacy.

Looking ahead, Meyer is optimistic about the Wolverines’ potential resurgence under new coach Kyle Whittingham. He praised Whittingham's fit for the program, noting, "He's 66 years old, but he's in a 50-year-old body and mind." As the November showdown approaches, Meyer will be keenly watching as this storied rivalry continues to evolve.
